Monastery of São Bento da Vitória
Dating back to the late 16th century, it was listed as a National Monument in 1977 and is one of the city’s most important religious buildings. Between 1985 and 1990, IPPAR subjected the Monastery to restoration work, allowing the Benedictine monks, the Porto National Orchestra and the Porto District Archive to move in.
As part of Porto 2001 – European Capital of Culture, the Noble Cloister is covered with an acoustic shell. In 2007, the State assigned a significant part of the building to the São João National Theatre – the east wing, part of the south wing and the Noble Cloister, where it holds theatrical performances, concerts and special events in its program, as well as hosting outside initiatives of various kinds. The monastery (Cloister) has a flexible capacity, varying according to the nature of the activities to be held: Audience/Concert: 320 people; Seated dinner: 500 people; Dinner on the go/other initiatives: 700 people.
