Moeda Caves

In S. Mamede, just 3 minutes from Fátima and 15 minutes from Batalha
In 1971, two hunters were chasing a fox that had taken refuge in a grotto in the middle of the woods. They went inside and realized how beautiful it was, with galleries full of countless limestone formations. They discovered the Moeda Caves.
The cave has a visitable length of 350 meters and a depth of 45 meters below the entrance level. The temperature is around 18ºC, which is constant throughout the year, making it easy for everyone to visit.

Visiting the cave
A guide accompanies visitors through the various natural galleries in complete safety, which have been named after the images they suggest: Lake of Happiness, Crib Room, Water Cave, Shepherd, Waterfall, Red Dome, Maritime, Imperfect Chapel, Red Vault and Fountain of Tears.
The guides are able to give the tour in several languages.

CICA gm – Scientific-Environmental Interpretation Center
In addition to the natural structure of the cave, you can also visit the Scientific-Environmental Interpretation Center (CICA gm). Here visitors can discover how a cave is formed and how it interacts with local biodiversity, understand the importance of limestone in our region and how it influences people’s way of life. You can also admire a magnificent and unique exhibition of minerals and fossils from Portugal and many other countries.
