D. Diogo de Sousa Museum

The D. Diogo de Sousa Archaeological Museum is a public organization under the Regional Directorate of Culture of the North, defined in its Organic Law as a regional archaeological museum.

The Museum was created in 1918 as a museum of archaeology and general art, with the aim of preventing the dispersal of local heritage which until then had been in the possession of private individuals and other institutions.
In 1980, with its revitalization, the Museum’s mission was redefined as a scientific-cultural body within the disciplinary scope of archaeology, and it began to carry out its basic activities in the fields of research support, museology, cultural dissemination, teaching support and the defence and preservation of the regional archaeological heritage.
