The exhibition is dedicated to cod and the Portuguese connection with the sea. Through technology, you’ll discover the adventure of the discovery of Newfoundland and the fishing campaigns in the icy seas of the North Atlantic.

The “bread of the seas” entered the consumption habits of the Portuguese from the 15th century onwards, and during the Estado Novo, the blessing of codfish was a public act and a form of political propaganda. In World War II, due to Portugal’s neutrality, the Portuguese fleet was painted white to avoid attacks.

Life on board is also highlighted, with objects and oral testimonies from fishermen in the collection of the Ílhavo Maritime Museum.

During your visit, you can even maneuver a dory and feel the loneliness and intense cold that the fishermen faced while line fishing. An immersive experience not to be missed!
