Bread Museum

The Bread Museum, based in Seia at Quinta Fonte do Marrão, is a private museum that aims to collect, preserve and exhibit the objects and heritage of Portuguese bread in its ethnographic, political, social, historical, religious and artistic aspects.

The Bread Museum project dates back to 1996, and was the result of synergies created between historians, entrepreneurs and teachers. From 1996 until its opening on September 26, 2002, the Museum’s collections were gathered, either through purchases from antique dealers, booksellers and auctions, or through donations. In the meantime, the collection of collections continues, as the Museum is constantly being renovated, which is an indispensable condition for the full pursuit of its objectives. The Museum’s space is the result of the reconstruction and extension of a pre-existing building, and the extensive work involved used materials typical of the region, such as wood and stone, in order to fully integrate the building into the surrounding mountain landscape.

The result was a museum complex with more than 3,500 m2 of covered area, making this Bread Museum one of the largest, if not the largest, Bread Museum in the world.
